Volkswagen integrated child seat
The German automaker is now offering a
child seat for its Passat and Passat Estate vehicles. The new seat, designed for children ages two to twelve,
integrates into the regular rear seating on its own or as a pair (parents of two children or twins take note.) Side head restraints reduce impact on the head by up to sixty percent. Side supports, which fold out of the way, provide optimal support and restraint as well as ease of use. The belt buckle system extends to soften during an impact. The seat conforms with all European safety standards.
The seat is available for the new Passat and comes in four types: Trendline, Comfortline, Sportline and Highline.

Great idea, i wonder why more OEM's dont do this! I know I would like to have a seat that wont detract from the look of the interior and can be stowed away when not needed.

Great idea. Any chance this will be an option for the Passat's in the US?

I'm sure all the automakers have researched this. They all want to chase soccer Moms that make the buying decisions. Probably the lawyers scared them away up to now.

Chrysler had integrated child seats in their mini-vans for many years in the early and mid 90s. From personal experience I can say they made the seat uncomfortable to sit in when they were folded away. I also recall that it wasnt a very popular option either. They had to unload most of the seats by putting them into the rental fleet vans.

Volvo has offered built in child seats for a long time, including here in the US (they're not really a replacement for full child seats, though - they're "booster seats" for kids too big for child seats, but too small for the full seat. The VW setup looks similar (and I'm pretty sure VW has offered something like these before in Europe on other models).

Wouldn't parents of twins automatically be parents of two children by default?

Volvo has integrated booster seats available on its cars in the US, as a $300 option.

"parents of two children or twins take note."
Read the quote Patrick. I have three kids, would that make them triplettes even though they were born years apart?
